About the Role

The General Labourer will be responsible for the care and well-being of the livestock, carrying out daily chores and accurate record keeping, and supporting the Sow Barn Manager on a daily basis.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure proper care and comfort of sows, gilts, and piglets.
  • Assist AI Technician with breeding as required.
  • Assist Farrowing Technician with processing and piglet care as required.
  • Ensure all animals have water and perform routine maintenance on water drinkers where required.
  • Carry out feeding routine.
  • Interpret labels, handle and administer medications and vaccines.
  • Monitor and maintain proper ventilation and temperature using automated control system.
  • Ensure accurate records are kept and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Operate a high pressure washer to ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards for the unit are met.
  • Follow safe manure management procedures when clearing out manure pits.
  • Follow proper safety precautions while working with large animals to minimize the chance of injury.
  • Follow the unit's biosecurity protocol.
  • Promote and exercise a high level of safety practices amongst all personnel in conjunction with company policies and the OHSA.
  • Report missing bolts or guards on machinery and do not operate until repaired, report cracks or holes in floors that may cause a tripping hazard, and get help moving heavy objects.
  • Report all injuries to a first aid attendant as soon as possible for treatment and documentation.
  • Maintain a high level of housekeeping.
  • General housekeeping and perform other duties as assigned.
